TOPs: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), PTSD, and their effects on college students
Completion requirements
Long term exposure to adverse childhood experience such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and child abuse create long-term consequences for adults including PTSD. Many of our students come from backgrounds with these types of experiences and their learning needs can include much more than simple academic instruction. I think it would be good for instructors outside of Human Services to learn about how many of our students have long-term emotional and mental health challenges and how to help the students succeed.
Learning Objectives:
- Instructors (and staff) will understand what Adverse Childhood Experiences are.
- Attendees will learn the effects of long-term childhood trauma.
- Attendees will understand how they can improve the success rates of their students by understanding their special challenges.
