Color/Contrast of Text

If the contrast between the background and the text color is not strong enough, people who have visual impairments may not be able to easily see the words.

Please see our brief video tutorial on creating accessible text (1:08) in Moodle.

This video shows how to update text that isn't accessible to a new color in Moodle (there is no audio).

Below is an example of some of the font colors you can use in Moodle that have been tested for contrast and accessibility. These colors are available by default in the text editor in Moodle.

Here is the default color of text.

Here is some blue text. Here it is in bold (to indicate the importance of the text).

Here is some purple text. Here it is in bold.

Here is some green text. Here it is in bold.

Hints for using colored text in your course:

  • You may wish to change the color of your text in Moodle for emphasis. We strongly encourage you to use bold text as well as changing the color to indicate emphasis in a second way (as some people who are colorblind will not see the color difference).
  • We strongly discourage you from using red text, as this may make reading the text challenging for those with colorblindness.
  • Check for contrast by using the WebAIM contrast checker.

Creating Lists

Lists that are not formatted using the list formatting tool can be difficult to navigate for users who use a keyboard to navigate or those who use screen readers. To learn how to use the styles editor in Moodle to create ordered and unordered lists, please watch this short tutorial video on creating formatted lists.

Avoid Underlining

It is best to avoid underlining online text that is not meant to be a hyperlink, as it can be confusing to users. Instead of underlining, use bold to indicate emphasis or the Headings styles to indicate a new section of text.
